THE CABBAGE FIELD
In my endless search
I ran from cabbage to cabbage
encircled in an immense field,
lifting every leaf in hope
of finding the firmness and roundness
that would move me to unwrap,
a few more weathered leaves
in order to expose the core.
But each cabbage is the sameall covering leaves are weathered,
with black spots on the inside veins,
and little holes
piercing its uniformity.
I can never unveil enough leaves
that will suit my real desire.
But soon fussiness disappears
and you leave your search behind, ,
collecting the cabbages you've found
in hope that once cooked
they will be edible.
