David Marchant
Cartoonist, painter, photographer

CABBAGE_1.jpg

David Marchant was born in Evansville, Indiana. Art has always been a favourite subject of David's. Photography became a part of his life in the 1960's and has remained the most consistent creative outlet. He experimented with different art forms, including cartoon, music, and video, but could never fully settle on one.

David earned his BA in Elementary Education in 1969 from the University of Evansville, and in 1973 David immigrated to Canada to teach in a one room school for 3 years. In 1977, along with his wife Joan, they settled in McBride, BC and have lived there ever since.

Creating his first painting "Cabbage" in 2005, his style of painting is self-described as "segmented realism," a type of representational art. Creating a grid pattern on the canvas allows David to paint one square every day until the painting is completed. From afar, the painting is meant to look like a photograph, but up close, you can see the detail in each individual square.

David has continued his artistic endeavors outside of painting. He is known locally for his yearly cartoon calendar and his Tuesday Night Music Jams where he plays guitar and mandolin.
