Artists and artisans of the Robson Valley
David R. Packer
Author

David R Packer is a science fiction and fantasy novelist whose work is deeply rooted in the landscapes of British Columbia — including the Robson Valley, where they now make their home. Born in Vancouver and raised across small towns in BC and Alberta, David grew up surrounded by books and storytelling. A family culture of reading, combined with a grandfather's well-worn bookshelf and another's readings from Scientific American, laid the foundation for a lifelong imagination. At ten, their father and uncle introduced them to Frank Herbert's Dune — and they have not looked back since.

David's writing life is shaped by two enduring passions: swords and coffee. A martial artist for over forty years, they spent much of that time teaching Historical European Martial Arts, an experience that informs the texture and authenticity of their fiction. Coffee, first introduced as a ritual around fencing tournaments and practice sessions, grew into a cornerstone of community and daily life — eventually leading David and their wife, Courtney, to found Loom and Forge, their own coffee roasting company.

In 2023, David and Courtney relocated to McBride after a chance stop on a road trip first revealed the Robson Valley's mountains. It felt immediately like home. That sense of place — rugged, grounded, and quietly extraordinary — runs through everything David writes.
